Goodbye Star Ferry...Democracy for Hong Kong
Awaiting a Democratic Hong Kong
Dear Hong Kong Rens,
I just want to say that let the image below of our most enduring symbol of home, the Star Ferry about to be knocked down to make way for developers to make millions in spite of the human and historical costs sear in our brains, as a reminder -a symbol that our government is incompetent, does not care about our history, our sense of place, and the heart of Hong Kong Rens.
I haven't really thought or felt any passion for a democratic Hong Kong for a while now. I haven't been that engaged in my surroundings for over a year. I had other personal things to deal with. But today, as I (again) couldn't help myself and walked pass the Star Ferry (again), I realized this is why I believe that we should have democracy. Why we should have a government that has to answer to us. Why that we cannot have rulers who put the interests of Big Business over what it means to be home.
There is a candle light vigil outside the Ferry right now, and sadly, I cannot attend. But my heart is there.
Look at this again, and remember forever that we deserve to rule ourselves.
Love Yan

Goodbye Star Ferry

You should probably be addressing HKers as yans, not rens. Kinda defeats the purpose, no?
